On March 17, 2004, the protests that later became known as the March 2004 Riots broke out in Kosovo. They lasted two days and during this period 20 civilians lost their lives, while more than 900 people were injured, most of them Albanians.

The events started after reports that three Albanian children had drowned in the Ibër River, trying to escape being chased by a group of young Serbs. However, the full circumstances of this tragedy were never fully revealed.

One of the children who survived stated to the media that they were followed and, while trying to leave, some of them ended up in the river where they drowned.

The next day, on March 17, protests broke out in many cities in Kosovo and quickly turned into violent clashes.

Initially, the protests had targeting the UNMIK administration, but the situation got out of control.

During the riots, Serbian houses and churches were burned, while Albanian property was also attacked in areas with a Serbian majority. In response, cases of burning of several mosques were reported in Serbia.
