Ankara – World-renowned Turkish historian Halil Inalcik died in Ankara on Monday at the age of 100.
Inalcik was born in Istanbul in 1916. He studied modern history at Ankara University’s Faculty of Language, History and Geography, where he also earned his PhD.
He taught Ottoman history at Chicago University until 1993.
Inalcik was later invited to join the faculty of Ankara’s Bilkent University, where he founded its history department, and where he taught until this year.
Inalcik wrote numerous books and articles on history.
His most important work was his first book, Hicrî 835 tarihli Sûret-i defter-i sancak-i Arvanid (Copied of register for A.H. 835 in Sanjak of Albania), which was published at Ankara in 1954 and presented one of the earliest available land register in Ottoman Empire’s archives.
