Indonesia said today it “respects Iranian sovereignty” after the conflict-hit country named Mojtaba Khamenei as its new supreme leader, Anadolu reports.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Yvonne Mewengkang told the Jakarta Globe that the government was “closely monitoring developments in Iran’s leadership, especially the announcement of a new supreme leader”.
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, became the third supreme leader. of Iran. His father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, held the position for nearly four decades before a joint US-Israeli airstrike on February 28 hit his home in Tehran, killing him at the age of 86.
“Indonesia respects Iran’s sovereignty and the country’s constitutional process,” Yvonne said.
Iran’s 88-member Assembly of Experts announced its decision to elect Mojtaban as the next supreme leader on Sunday evening.
Russia, Iraq, Oman, Azerbaijan and Belarus have officially congratulated Iran on the appointment.
Tensions in the region rose after the US and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran, which Tehran says killed around 1,300 people, including Supreme Leader Khamenei. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq and several Gulf countries that host US military assets.
