Osmani on CNN: Without quickly established institutions, Kosovo’s dream of NATO and the EU remains far away

In a live interview from Prishtina for the CNN show, the 6th president of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani (who served from 2021 until the end of her term in April this year), warned that this institutional blockage is very unfortunate because it has damaged Kosovo’s interests both domestically in terms of the economy and internationally, reports Klankosova.tv.

According to her, the crisis started completely unnecessarily at the exact time when an international momentum was being built and support in the Western world was increasing, especially with the new US administration.

She emphasized that the voice of the citizens this time is even clearer that they want a compromise between political forces so that institutions are created together and not only by one political force.

She added that while other countries in the region can choose the path where someone controls everything, Kosovo has always been a model where the union and joint work of political forces for national interests has brought benefits inside and outside the country.

The CNN reporter brought to attention the challenge of one-party governance, specifying that Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s party must now find a coalition partner to form the new government and secure a two-thirds majority to elect the new president. Asked what compromises are really possible to avoid paralysis, Osmani emphasized that a compromise must be reached for all three institutions: the new government, the leadership of the parliament and the president.

“Compromise is the best value you can have in politics. So, everyone will have to work with each other. And we are ready to give our country exactly that”, she said, clarifying that it is too early to say how the parties will behave others.

“We are ready to sit down and talk with the political parties, the majority parties. Of course, we do not want to talk with the only Serbian party that has participated in acts of aggression and violations of the constitutional order of Kosovo. But any other party here, all other political rivals are welcome”.

Further, Osmani called for urgent action, warning of strict legal deadlines and reiterated that before security caused by Serbia and the topics of Euro-Atlantic integration, the Albanian parties must remain united.

She emphasized that it is urgent to find a compromise in the interest of the country knowing the strict legal deadlines, and specifically the 60-day deadline for the election of the President.

She repeated the work that the Presidency had undertaken with the member states of NATO and the EU, emphasizing that the months of crisis are creating delays in the journey European and in the necessary NATO membership, so fast institutions are needed to continue these vital processes for the country.
