The head of the UN starts a “Ramadan solidarity trip” in Turkey

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will travel to Turkey’s capital, Ankara, as part of his “annual solidarity trip” for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, his spokesman said, Anadolu reports.

“As you know, every year the Secretary-General makes a solidarity visit during Ramadan. This year he will travel to Turkey, to the capital, Ankara, to pay tribute to the extraordinary generosity of the Turkish people.” over many years,” Stephane Dujarric told a news conference, adding that Guterres would depart today.

Recalling Turkey’s hospitality to “millions of people forced to flee violence and persecution,” Dujarric said Guterres would “meet during the trip representatives of non-governmental organizations working to support refugees in Turkey.”

“Turkey has offered shelter and support, hosting one of the largest refugee populations in the world, with approximately 2.5 million refugees and asylum seekers, including more than 2.3 million Syrians,” Dujarric noted.

Guterres will also accept the “State Prize, the Ataturk International Peace Prize” which he will accept on behalf of UN staff around the world, during his visit to Turkey.

“During his visit, the secretary-general is expected to hold talks with the President of Turkey (Recep Tayyip) Erdogan and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan,” Dujarric added.
