Thousands of students and citizens from all over Serbia gathered in Belgrade’s Slavija Square for a massive rally under the slogan “Ti i ja, Slavija” (You and I, Slavija), with large crowds filling the central streets of the Serbian capital chanting against the government and President Aleksandar Vučić, reports Anadolu.
The demonstration took place peacefully from 18:00 to around 20:00, however few after official protest activity ended, violent clashes broke out in the city center between a group of protesters and police forces.
Authorities deployed special units to bring the situation under control and disperse the crowd as tensions rose.
Local reports said police used force to remove protesters from several main roads near state institutions.
Protests have been held for months by students and groups. opposition, who demand early elections, a stronger fight against corruption, more functional institutions and more freedom for the media and universities.
