UNSC authorizes new sanctions regime in Central African Republic

The Unietd Nations Security Council unanimously decided to extend the mandate of the UN Integrated Peacebuilding Office in the Central African Republic until 31 January 2015.

“The Security Council today (January 28) extended the mandate of the United Nations peacebuilding office in the country, authorized the use of force by European Union troops, and added travel bans and asset freezes to an arms embargo already in place,” UN News Centre reported.

Approximately two thousand people have been killed in acts of violence in the Central African Republic since March.

According to UN data, one million people were forced to leave their homes due to clashes between insurgents and government forces.

4500 troops of the African Union and 1600 French troops are currently stationed in the country for peacekeeping purposes./TRT/
