The phenomenon is not related to an actual multiplication of Earth&#8217;s natural satellite, but to an optical illusion created by the refraction and reflection of moonlight.<\/p>\n<p>According to the physical explanation for the phenomenon, the premoon is caused when light from the real Moon passes through flat hexagonal ice crystals suspended high in the atmosphere. The ice crystals act as natural prisms, refracting the light and creating additional bright spots or &#8220;pseudo-moons&#8221; on each side of the main image.<\/p>\n<p>The atmospheric conditions prevailing in the area &#8211; low temperatures and the presence of thin ice clouds &#8211; are considered ideal for the appearance of such visual phenomena. Similar phenomena are more common in polar or extremely cold regions, which makes their appearance in urban centers rarer and more impressive.<\/p>\n<p>The premoon belongs to the same family of optical phenomena as &#8220;parasols&#8221; (also known as &#8220;pseudosols&#8221;), which are observed around the Sun.
