Markiplier, one of YouTube’s most recognizable names, has proven that the old rules of the film industry are dying. His latest film, Iron Lung, is a project written, directed, financed and performed entirely by him.<\/p>\n
It managed to rank as the second most watched film in the US this past weekend, grossing $18 million from an initial investment of just $3 million. In this race, he also left behind projects with heavy financial support, including the expensive documentary on the First Lady of the USA, Melania Trump.<\/p>\n
Iron Lung’s success did not come from traditional marketing, but from the power of a loyal community. Markiplier (real name Mark Edward Fischbach) asked his 38 million subscribers to request the film to be shown in local cinemas.<\/p>\n
The result was extraordinary: from the 50 cinemas originally envisaged, fan pressure led to the film being shown on over 4,200 screens worldwide. Although critics have described it as an amateur and monotonous production, the commercial success speaks otherwise. For Markiplier, this film is the culmination of a 14-year journey with his audience.<\/p>\n
