The office of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People “strongly denounced” Israel’s decision to resume land registration procedures in the occupied West Bank, warning that this move could lead to further expropriation of Palestinian owners, reports Anadolu.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the office said it “strongly denounces the decision of Israel, the occupying power, to resumed land registration procedures in the occupied West Bank, in addition to many other illegal policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Quds.”<\/p>\n
“These illegal measures risk further dispossession of Palestinian owners and the strengthening of Israel’s illegal control over the occupied territories,” the statement added.<\/p>\n
The statement added that “the latest actions constitute a serious escalation that violates international law and relevant UN resolutions and must be denounced”, emphasizing that “these so-called administrative measures cannot hide what they really are: the de facto annexation of the Occupied Palestinian Territory”.<\/p>\n
Emphasizing that “the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, should not be subjected to any measure aimed at changing its legal status, demographic composition or territorial integrity”, the office stated that: “To all these policies and measures are null and void, and Israeli settlement settlements and related policies in the occupied territories have no legal legitimacy and constitute serious violations of international law, as has been clearly confirmed by the International Court of Justice”.<\/p>\n
The Office called on Israel to “immediately stop and withdraw these measures” and at the same time called on the international community to “take concrete steps to bear responsibility and protect the prospect of a just and peaceful peace.” <\/p>\n
The statement also stressed that ending the Israeli “illegal occupation” remains the “only sustainable way forward,” along with realizing the unlimited rights of the Palestinian people and achieving a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders under international law and relevant UN resolutions. <\/p>\n
On Sunday, the Israeli government approved a proposal to register large areas of the West Bank as “property state” for the first time since Tel Aviv’s occupation of the territory in 1967.<\/p>\n
Palestinians warn that Israel’s actions pave the way for a formal annexation of the occupied West Bank, which they say would destroy the prospects for a Palestinian state envisioned in United Nations resolutions.<\/p>\n
