Senior officials on Thursday presented a framework for the governance, security and reconstruction of Gaza after the war during the inaugural meeting of the Peace Board, giving proposals ranging from rebuilding institutions to the creation of a new Palestinian police force, Anadolu reports.<\/p>\n
Nickolay Mladenov, director general of the Peace Board, announced the creation of a new administrative mechanism that will support the civilian leadership of <\/p>\n
“Today we are very pleased to announce the establishment of the Office of the High Representative for Gaza, under the Peace Board, which will be there to support, guide and assist the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, in the hope of removing the obstacles they will face in taking civilian and administrative control of the Gaza Strip,” he said. <\/p>\n
Mladenov added that the office will operate under the board’s supervision and his executive body and will coordinate with Israeli and Palestinian institutions as well as the international stabilization force.<\/p>\n
He also announced that recruitment for a Palestinian transitional police force has already begun.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs of this morning, we have started the recruitment process for the Palestinian police force\u2026 and in just the first few hours, 2,000 people have applied to join a new Palestinian transitional police force that will be formed in Gaza under the authority of the National Committee, with the support of the Peace Board and trained in Egypt,” he said.<\/p>\n
According to Mladenov, this force will be central to restoring order during the transition phase.<\/p>\n
“This Palestinian security force under the authority of the National Committee for the transition period will allow us to ensure that all factions in Gaza are disarmed and all weapons are placed under the control of a civilian authority,” he said.<\/p>\n
He thanked Qatar, Egypt and Turkey for supporting mediation efforts and stressed that reconstruction depends on disarmament, saying: “There is no other alternative than complete disarmament and the surrender of all weapons in Gaza so that reconstruction can begin and people have a new way of life ahead.”<\/p>\n
Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair also spoke at the meeting, describing the record of Gaza’s governance as deeply problematic and seeking far-reaching reforms.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor decades, governance in Gaza has been characterized by extremism, corruption, ineffective institutions and a total lack of a path to prosperity for the people of Gaza,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Blair outlined a vision for Gaza based on functioning public institutions, economic opportunity and technological development.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a vision of Gaza as part of the Middle East at peace\u2026 a real commitment to a region where, whether Muslim, Jew, Christian, of any religion or no religion, you can stand up with your own efforts and feel the government by your side, not on your back,” he said.<\/p>\n
He added that the framework proposed by President Donald Trump “remains the best, if not the only, hope for Gaza, the region and the wider world”.<\/p>\n
