Veteran Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon praised the Spanish government on Friday, February 27, for its support for Gaza, noting that it is “on the right side of history.”<\/p>\n
Sarandon is in Spain to accept an award at the prestigious Goya Awards for Spanish film.<\/p>\n
“I think Spain is doing a tremendous job,” Sarandon said, her voice shaking with emotion as she addressed reporters. in Barcelona.<\/p>\n
The actress particularly praised Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and actors like Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem for their clear and strong stance in support of Palestine.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you turn on the TV and see how strong and clearly morally upright Spain is on these issues, you feel less alone,\u201d Sarandon added.<\/p>\n
The Thelma & Louise star described Spain’s stance as “extremely important” in the context of the United States, which she called a place where repression and censorship are felt.<\/p>\n
Sanchez was one of the most vocal critics of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, becoming the most senior European leader to call the conflict “genocide.” His leftist government split from European allies in 2024 by recognizing the state of Palestine, angering Israel.<\/p>\n
“What I saw in him was that he was always on the right side of history and he said it very clearly,” Sarandon said, describing Sanchez as “handsome and tall.”<\/p>\n
“I believe every nation has the right to self-determination. I’m very pro-Palestinian. I’m an artist for I’m against killing children everywhere. It’s all kinds of illegal to African-Americans. And I’m very proud of the communities that have been able to fight ICE. But I personally feel very strongly that destroying the Palestinian people is a terrible crime. And I’m too ashamed to pay for it,” she said emotionally.<\/p>\n
She added that she faced professional repercussions in Hollywood for her stance, claiming her agency fired her after she marched and called for a ceasefire in Gaza, and that since then, major film and television work has become difficult.<\/p>\n
Sanchez thanked Sarandon, writing in X: “I am touched that someone who has been respected and admired by all of Spain for years has made such a wonderful public statement for our country.”<\/p>\n
Sarandon is in Barcelona to receive a lifetime achievement award at Spain’s most prestigious film awards, the Goyas. The actress won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1996 for her role in Dead Man Walking, in which she played a nun who supports a dying man. \/tesheshi.com\/<\/p>\n
