The United Nations has warned that Israeli restrictions on Gaza border crossings are severely hampering humanitarian operations, while fuel shortages risk halting vital services in the besieged territory.<\/p>\n
UN spokesman St\u00e9phane Dujarric, referring to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told a media briefing that almost all border crossings with Gaza remain closed except for Karem Abu Salem.<\/p>\n
According to him, only about 1.4 million liters of fuel have entered Gaza since Tuesday, while more than 2 million liters are needed per week to avoid the interruption or reduction of humanitarian services.<\/p>\n
The UN also warned that the lack of fuel is also preventing the removal of waste in the territory. Since February 10, humanitarian teams have managed to remove about 3,000 cubic meters of solid waste from over 350,000 cubic meters of accumulated debris.<\/p>\n
According to Dujarric, this pace is much lower than planned, mainly due to the lack of fuel and the insecure situation on the ground.<\/p>\n
The operations to shelter the displaced are also encountering great difficulties. Israeli restrictions on materials considered “dual-use”, such as work tools, heavy equipment, wood and cement, are limiting humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n
The UN has called for the reopening of more border crossings and for a continuous and predictable supply of aid and essential materials to Gaza. \/message<\/p>\n
