In the heart of Istanbul’s Uskudar neighborhood is the Shakirin Mosque, designed by Zeynep Fadillioglu, widely known as the first woman to design a mosque.<\/p>\n
The combination of centuries-old traditional art and contemporary design makes this space rich in symbolism and meaning, writes TRT World.<\/p>\n
The mosque covers an area of \u200b\u200b10,000 square meters and has a capacity of 500 people. It is covered by an aluminum dome with a fish scale pattern. Two 35-meter-high minarets stand next to the mosque, and the stone used in its construction was purchased from Kayseri.<\/p>\n
It was built in memory of Ibrahim and Semiha Shakirin, whose last name means “those who are grateful to God” in Arabic. The mosque was completed after four years of construction and opened to worshipers on May 7, 2009.<\/p>\n
Fadillioglu is a cousin of the Shakirin couple and the first woman to design a mosque in Turkey, and possibly the world. Its distinctive signature can be seen in the lighting, the water feature in the courtyard, the bronze and glass doors, and the impressive teardrop-shaped chandelier.<\/p>\n
The women’s space in the mosque has been designed to offer an unrestricted view of the asymmetrical chandelier at the center of the building, thus ensuring an equal prayer experience for both men and women. The teardrop-shaped glass spheres in this impressive chandelier are created using a traditional Turkish glassblowing technique to create a rain-like light effect, while its rings are engraved with the 99 names of Allah in Islam.<\/p>\n
The turquoise mihrab, inspired by Ottoman tiles, is another standout design element, as is the orange, ceramic-inspired dome. Tophane.<\/p>\n
The prayer space, surrounded by a string of lights, serves as a “mantle that envelops the worshipper,” while large glass walls open up views of the peaceful greenery of the Karacaahmet cemetery outside the mosque.<\/p>\n
Fadillioglu has designed 18 other mosques in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Germany, Kazakhstan, and the United Arab Emirates, and has completed more than 500 projects worldwide. the world.<\/p>\n
