A new three-ingredient topical combination shows better hair growth results with fewer side effects, according to recent studies<\/p>\n
Scientists may have found an anti-hair loss treatment that works better than the leading drugs currently in use.<\/p>\n
The key is not just one drug, but three, and they seem to work best when used together.<\/p>\n
About 80 million Americans, 50 million men and 30 million women experience some form of alopecia, although it affects women and men differently.<\/p>\n
According to NYU Langone, more than 80% of men and almost half of women experience hair loss at some point in their lives. Currently, there are only two FDA-approved treatments for androgenetic alopecia (AGA), also known as patterned hair loss: minoxidil and finasteride.<\/p>\n
However, results for hair growth with these treatments are limited. The effectiveness of finasteride ranges from 31% to 66%, while minoxidil has an average effectiveness of only 38%.<\/p>\n
Moreover, both are associated with the risk of side effects, Telegraph reports.<\/p>\n
To cope with this problem, the company Triple Hair Inc. has developed a topical treatment called TH07, which combines finasteride, minoxidil, and latanoprostin.<\/p>\n
Latanoprost is commonly used as eye drops to treat glaucoma and high eye pressure, but it has been shown to stimulate eyelash growth, increasing their thickness, length, and pigmentation.<\/p>\n
Minoxidil (known as Rogaine) stimulates the hair growth phase and activates dormant follicles. Hair growth usually occurs after a few months of use and lasts only as long as the treatment is used.<\/p>\n
Finasteride (Propecia) lowers the level of DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a hormone that inhibits the nourishment of hair follicles, causing them to weaken and fall out.<\/p>\n
In a recent study, men with mild to moderate alopecia were divided into groups and received topical treatment for six months with TH07, finasteride 0.1%, latanoprost 0.03% or minoxidil 5%.<\/p>\n
Most participants who used TH07 reported moderate hair growth and were more satisfied with their appearance compared to those who used only one of the ingredients.<\/p>\n
In the TH07 group, 52% of patients showed dense hair growth, while 30% showed moderate hair growth. In the other groups (finasteride, latanoprost, and minoxidil), no increase was observed in the majority of participants.<\/p>\n
\u201cTopical use of TH07 showed higher efficacy compared to the use of each component separately,\u201d the study authors reported.<\/p>\n
More importantly, patients who used TH07 reported no side effects, including sexual ones. Finasteride, when used alone, is associated with side effects such as erectile dysfunction, decreased sperm count, and depression.<\/p>\n
It is also associated with post-finasteride syndrome (PFS), a condition where side effects persist even after discontinuation of use, severely affecting the lives of some patients.<\/p>\n
The authors note that TH07 may be a safe and effective alternative for the treatment of alopecia, with potential for hair growth and minimal risk of side effects. However, they acknowledge that the study has limitations, such as the small number of participants, the inclusion of only men, and the short duration of treatment. More definite conclusions require longer clinical studies.<\/p>\n
