In the morning or evening, turn on the water, take a shower, wash your body and hair – and that’s it. However, dermatologists warn that things are not so simple.

That is, a large number of people shower in the “wrong order”, which can affect the fact that the skin and hair are not completely clean. It’s not a serious problem, but it’s also not ideal – especially if the routine is believed to give the maximum effect.

An additional complication comes from the fact that morning and evening showers have different advantages, so the routine must be adapted to each person’s needs. Also, experts advise to avoid the use of solid soaps. Although they seem harmless, they can be very aggressive to the skin and strip it of its natural oils.

And perhaps the most important question – is it really necessary to shower every day? According to dermatologists, the answer is no, especially for people over 50. In some cases, showering daily can also damage the skin.

Why doctors advise people over 50 not to shower every day

As Dr. Nicole Negbenebor, a dermatologic surgeon at the University of Iowa, the skin produces fewer natural oils as it ages and becomes thinner due to the loss of collagen. Precisely for this reason, it is more sensitive to drying, especially with frequent showers.

Dermatologist Dr. Brian Toy further explains that many soaps strip away the natural oils that keep the skin hydrated and protected. In addition, the sebaceous glands become less active over time, so the skin is naturally drier, especially on the face and legs.

Long, hot showers further aggravate the condition because they strip the protective layer from the skin even faster. The same applies to certain types of soaps, such as antibacterials and deodorants.

This is why experts advise that the shower be short, with lukewarm water and soft products.

How often should you shower after the age of 50

There is no universal rule that applies to everyone. The frequency of the shower depends on the level of physical activity, the amount of sweating and the external conditions.

According to Dr. Toy, a person who is less active and spends most of his time indoors during the winter may shower twice a week. On the other hand, someone who lives in a hot, humid climate and is physically active may need to shower much more often.Dr. Negbenebor generally recommends showering two to three times a week or every other day, especially for people with dry skin. In the meantime, it is possible to maintain hygiene by washing certain parts of the body, such as the armpits or the groin.

Of course, if you sweat or get dirty, showering is a must – but with lukewarm water, not hot, and with gentle preparations.

Skin care tips after 50

Dermatologists emphasize that hydration is key. After the shower, the skin should be gently wiped with a towel, but left slightly damp, and then a moisturizing cream should be applied. In this way, the moisture is “sealed” in the skin.

Soft products without fragrances and with as few additives as possible are recommended. As we age, it is often necessary to switch to thicker creams or ointments that provide more intensive care.

Dr. Toy emphasizes that hydration should be a daily habit, because it is the only way to relieve the dryness of the skin.

All this shows that the body changes with age, and with it the need for care. Just like changing your diet or supplements, it’s necessary to adjust how you shower—how often, but also how you shower. Unexpected tips are sometimes the most important.

We use cookies to improve the experience and display ads (Google AdSense).
By clicking “Accept”, you agree to the use of cookies according to
Privacy Policy
and
Cookies Policy.
You can reject non-necessary cookies by clicking “Reject”.

Source: prizrenpost

For many people, showering seems like the simplest part of the day.
