Scientists have found that in a large number of people, hypertension is caused by lumps in the blood vessels. small in the adrenal glands. These glands, which are located above the kidneys, produce the hormone aldosterone, which regulates salt and water levels in the body.<\/p>\n
When these nodules produce excess aldosterone, the body holds more salt than it needs, leading to severe hypertension that often does not respond to standard medications.<\/p>\n
Until now, identifying these nodules has been extremely difficult, as they are too small to be seen on regular scans. However, the research team used a new method through CT scanning with Metomidate, a specialized substance that sticks to aldosterone-producing cells.<\/p>\n
During this process, problem areas are clearly identified, allowing doctors to see exactly where the problem originates.\u00a0In the study published in the journal Nature Medicine, 128 patients were analyzed and the results were impressive: in two-thirds of them it was proven that the hormone excess came from a single lump in one of the glands.<\/p>\n
After removing these lumps through surgery, most patients managed to stabilize the tension and finally stop using the drugs.<\/p>\n
Director of the study, Professor Morris Bro\u00ebn, said that these lumps have been overlooked for decades because they were practically invisible, but with this new imaging method, doctors can find them and offer patients a definitive cure.<\/p>\n
It is estimated that about 1 in 20 people with high blood pressure may have this hidden cause.
