It remains unclear how advanced the discussions are or which specific countries could be affected if the plan is implemented.

The review comes after criticism from senior US officials over restrictions on the use of joint military bases in Europe during the conflict. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio questioned the rationale for keeping troops in allied countries if operational access is limited.

The issue of allied support was also raised by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who acknowledged that some member states initially reacted slowly, in part due to the sudden nature of the war. However, he emphasized that European allies ultimately played a key role in enabling American power projection.

Rutte also emphasized NATO’s broader strategic value, describing the alliance as essential not only to European security but also to U.S. defense.

“And NATO is there, of course, to protect the Europeans, but also to protect the United States,” he said.

Trump has repeatedly expressed displeasure. to NATO’s response to the conflict with Iran. In a Social Truth post after meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Wednesday, he wrote: “NATO was not there when we needed them and will not be there if we need them again.” White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said earlier that Trump believes NATO was “tested and failed” during the conflict. “It is quite sad that NATO has turned its back on the American people for the past six weeks,” she said, “when it is precisely the Americans who have funded their defense.”

Clashes in the region escalated after the U.S. and Israel on February 28 launched joint attacks on Iran, which left thousands dead and wounded. On Tuesday, Washington and Tehran announced a two-week ceasefire aimed at paving the way for a final agreement to end the war.

We use cookies to improve the experience and display ads (Google AdSense).
By clicking “Accept”, you agree to the use of cookies according to
Privacy Policy
and
Cookies Policy.
You can reject non-necessary cookies by clicking “Reject”.

Source: prizrenpost

US President Donald Trump’s administration is considering repositioning US troops away from some NATO allies it considers unsupportive during the war with Iran, ABC News reported.
