Hungarians will vote on Sunday in what is considered one of the most important electoral processes in Europe this year, a vote that could oust populist Prime Minister Viktor Orban from power after 16 years in charge. He is known as an ally of US President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
These elections are very important for Orb\u00e1n, who is the longest-serving leader in the European Union and often in conflict with it. He has gone from a liberal and anti-Soviet politician in his early days to a nationalist close to Russia and favored by the world’s far right.<\/p>\n
Voting centers opened at 6:00 a.m. and are expected to close at 7:00 p.m. Orb\u00e1n and his main opponent, P\u00e9ter Magyar, are expected to vote in the morning.<\/p>\n
The election is being closely watched in Europe and beyond, due to Orb\u00e1n’s major role in right-wing populist politics.<\/p>\n
Supporters of Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement see Orb\u00e1n’s government and his Fidesz party as an example of conservative and anti-globalist policies. Meanwhile, supporters of liberal democracy and the rule of law sharply criticize him.<\/p>\n
After the first hour of voting, 3.6% of registered voters have cast their ballots, according to the National Elections Office. This is a record in Hungary’s post-socialist history and almost twice as high as at the same time in the 2022 elections. \/time<\/p>\n
