UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has warned that respect for international law is weakening globally, especially in the Middle East, stressing that this could deepen instability and conflicts, reports Anadolu.<\/p>\n
“Around the world and especially in the Middle East, respect for international law is being violated,” Guterres told reporters during a press conference at the UN headquarters in New York, adding that “the rules governing the use of force and the development of hostilities are being ignored”.<\/p>\n
Warning of wider dangers, Guterres described international law as “indispensable”, adding that “without it, instability spreads, mistrust deepens and conflicts spiral out of control”.<\/p>\n
Regarding the situation in the Middle East, he stressed that “there is no military solution to this crisis” and that “peace agreements they require continued engagement and political will”.<\/p>\n
Calling for renewed diplomacy, Guterres said that “serious negotiations must resume” and stressed that “the ceasefire must be preserved”.<\/p>\n
“And international navigation rights and freedoms, including in the Strait of Hormuz, must be respected by all parties”, he added.<\/p>\n
When asked if he is aware of the possibility of resuming negotiations US-Iran Guterres said: “The indications we have are that it is very likely that these talks will resume,” citing his recent conversation with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar.<\/p>\n
The UN chief also referred to Lebanon, calling the talks between Israel and Lebanon “very important” for creating the conditions for change on the ground.<\/p>\n
“The truth is that Hezbollah and Israel have always helped each other. to destabilize the government of Lebanon,” he added.<\/p>\n
