An investigation published by the BBC has made serious accusations against the Greek authorities, claiming that the police have recruited migrants to forcibly return other migrants across the border with Turkey.<\/p>\n

According to the report, carried out in collaboration with the organization Consolidated Rescue Group (CRG), these people – who are described as “mercenaries” – have been used in the border region of Evros since 2020, under the supervision of officials of high.<\/p>\n

The evidence collected describes severe cases of violence, where migrants are said to have been stripped, robbed, beaten and in some cases sexually abused. The investigation is based on video, testimony from migrants, former participants in these operations, police sources and leaked internal documents.<\/p>\n

The practice of so-called “pushbacks” – the forced return of asylum seekers without being given the opportunity to seek asylum – is considered illegal under international law.<\/p>\n

The Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has stated to the BBC that he is unaware of these claims, while the Greek authorities have not responded to requests for comment.<\/p>\n

Similar allegations of violent border operations have been previously reported by investigative media, including the Lighthouse Reports in 2022.<\/p>\n

According to sources, recruited migrants come from countries such as Pakistan, Syria and Afghanistan and are rewarded with cash, confiscated phones and documents allowing them to pass through Greece.<\/p>\n

Greece has experienced over one million migrant arrivals since 2015, mainly through the Aegean Sea and the land border at the Evros River, one of the most militarized areas on the border of the European Union. \/message<\/p>\n
