It is an automated structure that is 8.8 meters high, in which plants are grown under controlled conditions and significantly faster than in traditional production.

The farm, which covers only 100 square meters, was developed under the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Despite its small area, it can produce up to 50 tons of lettuce per year, thanks to a multi-level cultivation system spread over 20 levels.

The entire production process is fully automated, from planting and transplanting to harvesting and packaging. According to experts, the key to success lies in full control of conditions such as light, temperature, water and nutrients, while robots do most of the work.

Special technology includes the use of LED lights that simulate optimal conditions for photosynthesis. More than 1,300 different “light recipes” have been developed that adapt to different types of plants and growth stages, which allows accelerated development and high yields.

Under these conditions, lettuce ripens in only 30 to 35 days, which is almost half the time of classical production. The yield per unit area can be up to 120 times higher compared to traditional methods.

An additional advantage is that cultivation takes place without soil, in a sterile environment, which eliminates pests and diseases. Therefore, the products are free of pesticides, heavy metals and chemical additives.

However, despite the impressive results, high production costs remain a challenge. Experts point out that up to 70 percent of the costs are spent on the electricity needed for lighting and temperature control.

Currently, producing a kilogram of lettuce under these conditions costs between $1.5 and $2.2, which is significantly more compared to conventional farming, according to China Daily. /tesheshi.com/

We use cookies to improve the experience and to display ads (Google AdSense).
By clicking “Accept”, you agree to the use of cookies according to
Privacy Policy
and
Cookies Policy.
You can reject non-necessary cookies by clicking “Reject”.

Source: prizrenpost

A high-tech vertical farm has been developed in the Chinese city of Chengdu that is pushing the boundaries of modern agriculture.
