Pakistan wants a “permanent end” to the US-Israeli war against Iran, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said today at the Diplomacy Forum in Antalya, calling on Washington and Tehran to “show flexibility”, Anadolu reports.<\/p>\n
Pakistan is mediating between the US and Iran after the war began on February 28 and has hosted the highest-level talks between the two sides since they severed diplomatic relations in 1979.<\/p>\n
“Our goal is not to extend the ceasefire. Our main goal is to end the war permanently” and reach an agreement between the parties, Dar said during the high-level segment of the forum in the Turkish resort city of Antalya.<\/p>\n
Regarding Pakistan’s mediation, Dar said: “More than 80 percent of the work has been done. And some issues remain… the two sides must show flexibility”.<\/p>\n
Dar’s statement, which called on the US and Iran to show flexibility, comes as Tehran announced today that the Strait of Hormuz is “fully open” to commercial shipping \u2014 for the first time since the war began on February 28. Pakistan secured a 14-day ceasefire between the US and Iran on April 8.<\/p>\n
Tehran imposed control over this key sea route shortly after the US and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28, affecting global energy supplies and maritime traffic.<\/p>\n
The US has also imposed a blockade on Iranian ports since Monday this week, while President Donald Trump has threatened to will continue it.<\/p>\n
Tehran’s announcement came after Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir, met with Iran’s top civilian and military leadership over the past two days in Tehran.<\/p>\n
