Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have risen again after Iran announced on Saturday the return of restrictions and the effective closure of this strategic sea route.<\/p>\n
At least two merchant ships were reportedly shot at while trying to pass through the strait. The United Kingdom Maritime Operations (UKMTO) says two Iranian Revolutionary Guard vessels have opened fire on a tanker and another ship, about 37 kilometers northeast of Oman, without warning.<\/p>\n
One of the ships attacked was reported to have been a large Indian-flagged tanker loaded with about two million barrels of crude oil from Iraq.<\/p>\n
The event comes just a day after former US President Donald Trump declared that the passage through the Strait of Hormuz had been fully reopened to commercial traffic.<\/p>\n
According to international media, about 20 ships waiting to pass through have been forced to return to Oman, while the Iranian navy has sent radio messages announcing a ban on navigation in the area.<\/p>\n
However, some movement was recorded during Saturday. Reuters reported that eight tankers managed to cross the strait, marking the first significant movement since the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran broke out on February 28.<\/p>\n
Data from ship tracking services also showed that some tankers had started to leave the Arabian Gulf before the new restrictions were announced by Iran. \/message<\/p>\n
