However, not all foods are good at these times.<\/p>\n<p>Some foods that are otherwise healthy can worsen symptoms and make recovery more difficult. Here are some foods to avoid and what to eat instead.<\/p>\n<p>Avoid nuts and broccoli. While nutritious, they are high in fat and fiber, which can put an extra strain on the digestive system when the body is weakened. Eat red peppers and mushrooms instead. Red peppers are rich in vitamin C and powerful antioxidants, while mushrooms support the immune system.<\/p>\n<p>Avoid hard vegetables and citrus fruits as they can further irritate the throat. Choose eggs and honey instead. Eggs are easy to swallow and contain immune-boosting vitamins and minerals, while honey soothes irritations and can reduce coughs.<\/p>\n<p>Avoid dairy products and beans, as they can further tax the digestive system and worsen symptoms. Choose oatmeal, white rice and bananas instead.
