Israeli forces have announced the establishment of a so-called “yellow line” in southern Lebanon, a measure similar to that established in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n
In a statement on Saturday, the Israeli military said that over the past 24 hours, its forces operating south of the line have identified gunmen who it says have violated the ceasefire agreement and are approaching from the north in order to posed an immediate threat.<\/p>\n
This is the first time Israel has used the term “yellow line” in Lebanon, after a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon took effect on Thursday.<\/p>\n
In Gaza, a similar measure has divided the territory into different zones, where the eastern part is controlled by the Israeli army, while the movement of Palestinians is less restricted in the western part. According to reports, Israeli forces regularly fire on anyone who approaches this line and have demolished hundreds of houses in areas under their control.<\/p>\n
Since the ceasefire in Gaza came into force in October, at least 773 people have been killed and over 2,000 wounded by Israeli attacks.<\/p>\n
Journalist Nour Odeh, reporting from Ramallah, described this development as a continuation of the “gasification” of south of Lebanon. According to her, the Israeli Minister of Defense, Israel Katz, has given instructions for the demolition of border villages in Lebanon, based on the models of Beit Hanoun and Rafah in Gaza.<\/p>\n
She added that, although there does not currently seem to be any intention to expand the occupied territory in the south of Lebanon, the destruction of villages is continuing, while the Israeli authorities have made comparisons between Shia villages and Hezbollah infrastructure, in a similar way to the treatment of Palestinian areas in Gaza. \/message<\/p>\n
