The British government today reiterated that sovereignty over the Falkland Islands belongs to the United Kingdom, following a report that the US may review its stance on London’s claim to the territory, reports Anadolu.<\/p>\n
“The Falkland Islands have voted overwhelmingly to remain an external territory of the United Kingdom and we have always supported the residents’ right to self-determination,” said a government spokesman.<\/p>\n
As the BBC reports, The spokesman said the government “could not be clearer” in its position.<\/p>\n
“Sovereignty belongs to the United Kingdom and the right of self-determination of its residents is paramount,” he said, noting that this position has been repeatedly communicated to successive US administrations.<\/p>\n
The statements come after a report citing an internal Pentagon email, which mentions possible measures Washington could take against allies who have not supported the campaign his in Iran.<\/p>\n
The Falkland Islands are administered by the United Kingdom as an overseas territory, but Argentina claims sovereignty over them, calling them the Malvinas Islands.<\/p>\n
The dispute escalated in 1982, when Argentina occupied the islands, triggering the Falkland War. Following the return of control from the United Kingdom, residents were granted full British citizenship by the British Nationality (Falkland Islands) Act 1983.<\/p>\n
