A study published in the journal Nature Communications has discovered an ancient river preserved under the ice of East Antarctica, which has remained covered for millions of years.<\/p>\n

According to researchers from Durham University, the hidden area was once a warm region with rivers flowing towards the coast, before Antarctica was covered by ice about 34 million years ago. In the distant past, the continent may even have had tropical vegetation.<\/p>\n

The landscape was revealed through satellites and ice-penetrating radars, showing structures formed by ancient rivers, “frozen in time” under the ice sheet.<\/p>\n

However, scientists warn that global warming could cause the ice to retreat in the future, exposing this terrain to millions for the first time. years.<\/p>\n

The study also points out that East Antarctica contains the potential for sea level rise of up to about 60 meters if it were to melt completely, although this is a long-term and extreme scenario.<\/p>\n
