At least 27 journalists have been killed in Israeli attacks in Lebanon since March 2, along with many others injured, the editors of the Lebanon Press Union said Thursday.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the union condemned the targeting of a group of journalists in the southern city of Tayri on Wednesday, which killed reporter Amal Khalil and wounded her colleague Zeinab Faraj.<\/p>\n
The union said that Khalil had previously received death threats from the Israeli military.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith her murder, the number of journalists and media workers killed has risen to 27, in addition to a large number of wounded,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n
The union called on the Federation of Arab Journalists to cooperate with international and Arab press unions to support Lebanese journalists amid targeted Israeli attacks.<\/p>\n
It also urged journalists working on the ground in Lebanon to exercise caution, avoid high-risk areas and coordinate with the Lebanese army and other official security forces in areas exposed to Israeli attacks, including UNIFIL, the Lebanese Red Cross and local aid teams, “to avoid any sudden fatal danger.”<\/p>\n
The union said Israel’s actions against Lebanese civilians, especially journalists, “have exceeded all limits,” calling on the government Lebanese to take urgent action in international organizations and file a legal suit against Israel.<\/p>\n
During Wednesday’s attack, Israeli forces prevented the Red Cross and Lebanese army forces from reaching the two journalists and hit a road connecting Tayri with Haddatha to block rescuers, according to the state news agency NNA.<\/p>\n
Since March 2, Israeli attacks in Lebanon have killed 2,475 people, injured 7,696 and displaced more than 1.6 million people, according to official data.<\/p>\n
A 10-day ceasefire announced by the US on April 16 is set to expire on Sunday and has been violated daily by Israel.<\/p>\n
