The administration of President Donald Trump is seeking to create an international coalition to restore navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, while ship traffic in this vital waterway remains blocked due to the US-Iran standoff, according to a report published Wednesday by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), reports Anadolu.<\/p>\n
Citing an internal State Department cable sent to US embassies, the newspaper reported that Washington has asked his diplomats to urge foreign governments to join a new alliance called the Maritime Freedom Construct, which will coordinate information sharing, diplomatic efforts and sanctions enforcement to reopen the strait.<\/p>\n
“Your participation will strengthen our collective ability to restore freedom of navigation and protect the global economy,” the cable said, according to news.<\/p>\n
It is further said that a senior administration official has confirmed the proposal as one of the diplomatic and political tools available to the president.<\/p>\n
The initiative comes several weeks after Trump declared the strait “fully open and ready for business”, while ship traffic has remained largely blocked. Iran has attempted to lay mines and attack tankers passing through the strait without Tehran’s approval, while the US has imposed a blockade on all ships going to or from Iranian ports.<\/p>\n
