The UN has expressed concern over Israel’s detention of the global humanitarian flotilla Sumud in international waters, calling on all parties to respect international law and allow wider humanitarian access, reports Anadolu.<\/p>\n
“The way this operation was carried out is extremely disturbing. Everyone must follow their obligations under international law,” UN spokesman Stephane told reporters. Dujarric.<\/p>\n
“We don’t want anyone to get hurt, but let’s be honest, the solution to all of this is a more humanitarian approach,” he added.<\/p>\n
Israel’s Foreign Ministry said its naval forces stopped and seized more than 20 ships of the Sumud Global Flotilla in international waters in the Mediterranean Sea and detained about 175 activists on board. The attack took place near the Greek island of Crete, hundreds of nautical miles (more than 1,000 kilometers) from Israel.<\/p>\n
The flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid, set out two weeks ago from the Italian island of Sicily, with a total of 58 ships aiming to break Israel’s years-long blockade of Gaza.<\/p>\n
Israel has imposed a blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007, leaving the population of 2.4 million on the brink of starvation.<\/p>\n
The Israeli army launched a two-year offensive in Gaza in October 2023, killing more than 72,000 people, injuring over 172,000 and causing widespread destruction in the territory.<\/p>\n
