The European Commission has now presented a strategy to achieve this goal. It is about several different points. One of the main points is housing: the European Commission wants member states to provide more affordable and social rental housing. Also, programs are foreseen to prevent the loss of housing, for example through early warning systems and counseling services.

In addition, the European Commission also focuses on child poverty. The anti-poverty strategy calls for improving education and care provision. For example, children should receive free meals at school.

Member States responsible for social policy

Social policy is usually the responsibility of member states. As a third point, the aim is to improve the inclusion of people with disabilities, as they are particularly at risk of poverty. One of the objectives is that people with disabilities face fewer barriers when traveling.

However, the strategy mainly consists of recommendations to member states. For most of the social policy, the competence belongs to the member states and not to the European Union. On the part of the European Commission, there are no additional funds for the implementation of the strategy. Instead, the funds that already exist should be put to better use. As a next step, member states must discuss the proposals. According to European Union data, one in five people in the European Union is considered at risk of poverty. Among children, this figure is even one in four.

We use cookies to improve the experience and to display advertisements (Google AdSense).
By clicking “Accept”, you agree to the use of cookies according to
Privacy Policy
and
Cookies Policy.
You can reject non-necessary cookies by clicking “Reject”.

Source: prizrenpost

It is an ambitious objective that the European Union has set itself: by 2050, poverty in the EU must be eliminated.
