The details vary from one species to another, but usually include a support mechanism (stay apparatus), gravity control, or special tendons that “lock” the joints.

Sleeping standing up has advantages because these animals would be slower to get up if attacked. When they are already on their feet, they can quickly get away from predators. Often, there is also an individual in the herd who stands guard and gives the alarm.

Let’s look at some well-known animals that can sleep standing up:

Horses
Horses are among the most common animals to be seen sleeping on their feet. Like elephants, they have a support mechanism that allows them to “lock” one of their hind legs and maintain balance while sleeping. The front legs also help, but one hind leg carries most of the weight.

One sign that a horse may be sleeping on its feet is when it stands still, with its eyes closed and one hind leg slightly bent. This leg “rests”, while the other bears the weight.

However, for deep sleep, horses need to lie down. Then they enter the REM phase, where the muscles relax completely and cannot stand.

Cows
Cows have a similar ability to horses, “locking” their leg joints to sleep standing up.

Although they prefer to lie down for deeper sleep, standing rest helps them be alert to danger. They do not sleep for many hours in a row like humans, but they do have many short sleep cycles during the day.

Elephants
Elephants have special sleeping habits. Those in captivity sleep about 4-6 hours a day, while in the wild they can function with only 2 hours.

Wild elephants usually sleep standing up and rarely lie down, because raising their large bodies takes time and energy. Sleeping standing up protects them from dangers.

Giraffes
Being the tallest animal in the world is not easy. Giraffes sleep very little, about 1-2 hours a day, usually in short and standing sleep.

Sometimes they only sleep for 5 minutes. The reason is the same: to be ready to flee quickly in case of danger. When they feel safe, they lie down for a deeper sleep.

Zebras
Zebras sleep both standing and lying down. When standing, they sleep lightly and briefly, thanks to the support mechanism in the legs.

For deep sleep, they lie on their sides, but this makes them more vulnerable, so usually one member of the flock stands guard.

Flamingos
Flamingos have a very special way of sleeping. They can stand and sleep for long periods of time on one leg, using very little energy.

Their sleep is short and intermittent. In safe environments they can lie down for deeper rest, but this rarely happens.

Penguins
Penguins sleep standing up to stay warm and dry. They gather in large colonies, especially during the winter in Antarctica.

Emperor penguins often take micro-sleeps during the day and night, sometimes with one eye open, to stay alert.

We use cookies to improve the experience and display ads (Google AdSense).
By clicking “Accept”, you agree to the use of cookies according to
Privacy Policy
and
Cookies Policy.
You can reject non-necessary cookies by clicking “Reject”.

Source: prizrenpost

We humans often use the expression “sleep standing up” to show that someone does not understand anything, but in fact there are animals that really sleep standing up, in the literal sense of the word.
