Serbia and Israel, united in the new geopolitics<\/p>\n
The signing of a secret agreement on the exchange of data in the field of defense has brought military cooperation between Serbia and Israel back into focus.<\/p>\n
The government says the new agreement creates conditions for cooperation between the two countries in the field of the defense industry, but did not provide details.<\/p>\n
The opposition criticizes the deepening of cooperation with Israel, saying it comes at the wrong time, given that country’s military operations in Gaza and its participation in the conflict. with Iran.<\/p>\n
Commenting on these assessments, Serbian President Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107 stated on May 5 that he did not want to justify himself to anyone and that the country cooperates with both Iran and Israel.<\/p>\n
Security and geopolitical consultant Nikola Luni\u0107 says that such agreements are the first step countries take when exporting sophisticated military technology, and he assumes that this is the case here as well.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo industry company of defense with modern products will not come to a third country if their technology is not adequately protected,” Lunic told Radio Free Europe (RSE).<\/p>\n
The Serbian government and the Ministry of Defense did not respond to RSE’s questions about what this agreement brings to the cooperation between the two countries. The Israeli Ministry of Defense also did not respond to a request for comment by the time this text was published.<\/p>\n
Israel is not the only country with which Serbia shares and protects classified information.<\/p>\n
Belgrade has such agreements with more than 20 countries and international organizations.<\/p>\n
The defense ministries of Serbia and Israel signed a General Security Agreement on the Exchange and Mutual Protection of Classified Information in the Field of Defense.<\/p>\n
“The objectives of this agreement are to ensure the protection of classified information that is transferred or exchanged between the parties, to ensure the protection of facilities, the safety of personnel and other matters on which the parties mutually agree,” said the representative of the Ministry of Defense, Marko Jovanovic, at a session of the parliamentary Defense Committee.<\/p>\n
He did not specify which projects he was referring to, but added that the initiative for the agreement came from the Israeli.<\/p>\n
The agreement with Israel entered into force before the members of the Serbian Parliament voted for its ratification.<\/p>\n
At the request of the Serbian Government, the Parliamentary Committee for Defense and Internal Affairs gave its consent on April 29 to its temporary implementation until its official entry into force.<\/p>\n
This is legally possible if the Government cites as a reason the need for urgent implementation.<\/p>\n
When the representatives of the opposition asked why they are insisting on urgent procedures, the representative of the Ministry of Defense, Marko Jovanovic, said that the implementation of the agreement will enable the entry into force of the contract for “equipment with weapons and improving the operational capabilities of the Serbian Army” as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
