Today, it has a population of 42 million inhabitants.

Jakarta is the heart of Indonesia, as well as its political, economic and cultural center. Its streets are full of scooters, skyscrapers that are growing at an incredible speed, markets full of life… But behind the modern facade lies a serious problem that experts have warned for years that large parts of the city may soon end up under the sea.

Jakarta is sinking and not symbolically or slowly over the centuries. Some parts of the city are descending at such a rate that scientists and urban planners call the situation one of the biggest urban threats today. In some districts, the land is sinking more than ten centimeters a year, which is among the fastest rates of land subsidence in the world.

It is for this reason that the Indonesian government decided to take an action that is rarely considered by any country. Build a brand new capital and move the administrative center of the country.

Photographs of the city often look unreal

The main reason for Jakarta’s sinking is over-pumping of groundwater. Many parts of the city did not have a high-quality drinking water supply system for decades, so residents, companies and industry massively used wells and extracted water from the ground. As the water receded, the land began to lose stability and slowly sink.

The situation is further aggravated by the fact that Jakarta is located in a swampy area through which as many as 13 rivers flow. During torrential rains, water often overflows, and due to the ever-lowering land and rising sea levels, flooding becomes increasingly serious. In some parts of the city, residents have built extra floors or raised the thresholds of their houses for years to protect themselves from the water that regularly seeps into the neighborhood.

Northern parts of Jakarta, which are located along the Java Sea coast, are particularly at risk. Large protective walls have already been built there to prevent sea intrusion, but experts warn that this may not be a sufficient long-term solution.

Photographs of the city often look unreal. In some neighborhoods, houses are partially submerged, roads are cracked and deformed, and residents live with the risk of new floods every day. Many say they have had to adapt to life on water, because during the rainy seasons some roads become completely impassable.

The plan is extremely ambitious. The new city must be modern, sustainable and technologically advanced, and the aim is to relieve congested Jakarta and reduce pressure on infrastructure.

The relocation of the capital is one of the biggest projects in Indonesia’s history.

Jakarta is promised not to disappear. It will continue to be the country’s economic and financial center, a city of millions of people and a place that drives much of Indonesia’s economy. /tesheshi.com/

We use cookies to improve the experience and display ads (Google AdSense).
By clicking “Accept”, you agree to the use of cookies according to
Privacy Policy
and
Cookies Policy.
You can reject non-necessary cookies by clicking “Reject”.

Source: prizrenpost

The serious challenges of a metropolis that began to “eat itself” On the northern coast of the island of Java, there is a large city that, according to the latest United Nations data, will occupy the first place in the list of the largest megacities in 2025, surpassing Tokyo.
