The U.S. government has begun repatriating 17 American citizens from a cruise ship where the hantavirus broke out, the Department of Health and Human Services said Sunday, Anadolu reports.<\/p>\n
A charter flight from the State Department transported the Americans aboard the MV Hondius after the ship docked Sunday in Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands, the health service said on its social media platform. American X.<\/p>\n
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also coordinated evacuation efforts. Two passengers, one of whom had mild symptoms and another who tested positive for the virus, traveled to the plane’s biocontamination units.<\/p>\n
The passengers will initially be taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. The symptomatic passenger will later be transferred to a second specialized treatment center.<\/p>\n
“Upon arrival at each facility, each person will undergo clinical assessment and receive appropriate care and support based on their condition,” the health service said. The CDC has classified the outbreak as a level 3 emergency response, the agency’s lowest level of emergency activation.<\/p>\n
The outbreak, involving the Andean strain of hantavirus, has resulted in five confirmed cases, including three deaths, according to World Health Organization (WHO) officials. Scientists confirmed that the outbreak was caused by the rare variant of the Andean hantavirus, the only known strain capable of human-to-human transmission, usually through close contact.<\/p>\n
The WHO said two passengers who later died had traveled to Argentina, Chile and Uruguay before boarding the ship.<\/p>\n
CDC officials said the passengers will be monitored for about six weeks, reflecting the period of incubation of the virus while health authorities in several US states are also tracking passengers who left the ship before the outbreak was confirmed.<\/p>\n
