Democratic senator, criticism of starting a war with Iran with wrong calculations<\/p>\n

The U.S. military’s stockpiles of ammunition and tactical missiles have been seriously depleted, Democratic U.S. Senator Mark Kelly warned Sunday.<\/p>\n

“I think it’s fair to say it’s shocking how deep we’ve gone in those stocks,” the senator told U.S. television CBS News.<\/p>\n

Kelly said U.S. President Donald Trump plunged the United States into war with Iran “with no strategic objective, no plan, no timeline, and as a result we’ve used too much ammunition.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelly, a ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, cited Pentagon reports detailing stockpiles of specific missiles, including the Tomahawk, ATACMS, SM-3 and those used in the Patriot systems. It would take “years” to replenish these stocks, he said, without giving specific figures.<\/p>\n

He warned that the US may not be able to defend itself in the event of a prolonged conflict. The US would then be “in a worse position” than if “this war in Iran had not happened,” Kelly said.<\/p>\n

The Pentagon is currently seeking approval for a significant increase in defense spending. The Trump administration’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2027 calls for nearly $1.5 trillion in defense spending.<\/p>\n

Kelly described it as “excessive,” saying the Pentagon’s budget was $700 billion when he joined the Senate five and a half years ago.<\/p>\n

According to the Pentagon, the Iran war has cost the United States about $25 billion through the end of April. This figure represents the total estimated expenditure since the US attack on Iran in late February, most of which has been spent on munitions. \/tesheshi<\/p>\n
