The efforts in Brussels to be an actor and not a victim of the hectic geopolitical changes<\/p>\n

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called on Tuesday for the acceleration of European defense production as EU defense ministers met in Brussels for talks on Ukraine, industrial capacity and security in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

“We are focusing on innovation and joint projects because we have many projects in different member states that are not interoperable,” Kallas said ahead of meeting.<\/p>\n

She emphasized that the EU should encourage member states to make more joint procurements and be more innovative, adding that the lessons from the war in Ukraine should be taken into account.<\/p>\n

Kallas stated that the production of the defense industry remains a problem, despite the available funds.<\/p>\n

“States have a lot of funds available, but the defense industry is not increasing its production,” she said.<\/p>\n

Minister Ukraine’s Defense Minister is expected to attend the talks, which will also discuss the proposed \u20ac90 billion loan for Kiev’s urgent needs, Kallas said.<\/p>\n

She added that the ministers will also talk to representatives of the defense industry to analyze the ‘bottlenecks’ in production and delivery.<\/p>\n

“We need to see what the problem is in order to connect them,” she said.<\/p>\n

Speaking of Middle East, Kallas said the ministers will discuss Lebanon and maritime security operations.<\/p>\n

She stressed that there was interest among member states in a possible new European mission to support the Lebanese Armed Forces after the planned end of the UNIFIL mission later this year.<\/p>\n

Kallas also stressed that the EU maritime operation in the Strait of Hormuz will be discussed, adding that its operational plan could be adapted if member states agree.<\/p>\n

“We already have it. We just need to change the operational plan of that mandate,” she said, adding that the structure of the mission was already in place, but that further political agreement and input from member states would be needed to proceed. \/tesheshi<\/p>\n
