US President Donald Trump has announced that he will hold wide-ranging discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Iran during their two-day summit, Anadolu reports.<\/p>\n
Trump insisted that the US does not need help dealing with the situation as the war remains in an indefinite ceasefire for more than a month, but acknowledged that it will be an important topic during his meetings with the president. <\/p>\n
“We’re going to have a long conversation about that. I think he’s been relatively good, to be honest with you. Look at the blockade, there’s no problem. They get a lot of their oil from that area. We’ve had no problem and he’s been a friend of mine,” Trump told reporters at the White House as he prepared to leave for Beijing. <\/p>\n
China is reportedly the largest buyer of Iranian crude, accounting for 90 percent of it. of Iran’s total oil sales.<\/p>\n
Beijing has increasingly shown a willingness to openly challenge US sanctions on Iranian oil sales. Earlier this month, China instructed companies to ignore US sanctions against five Chinese refiners sanctioned for their alleged role in facilitating the Iranian oil trade.<\/p>\n
Asked by a reporter if Xi should intervene in Iran, Trump insisted that it was not necessary.<\/p>\n
“I don’t think we need help with Iran. We’re going to win it one way or another. We’re going to win it peacefully or otherwise.” he said.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, as reported by the state-run Xinhua news agency, asked Pakistan to step up mediation efforts and contribute to the “proper handling” of issues related to the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
Wang made the comments during a phone call with his Pakistani counterpart, Ishaq Dar, as Islamabad continues efforts to organize a second round of direct talks between the U.S. and Iran.<\/p>\n
According to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two top diplomats stressed the importance of maintaining a “durable” ceasefire between the US and Iran, as well as ensuring normal passage through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
Pakistan brokered a two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran on April 8, followed by important talks in Islamabad on April 11 and 12, attended by delegations from high from both countries. Neither side reached an agreement to end the war.<\/p>\n
Since then, both sides in the conflict have exchanged formulas and counter-formulas to find a middle ground and resume the second round of direct talks to end the war, which has already disrupted global energy supplies and daily life across the region.<\/p>\n
