Israel had briefly detained and interrogated a senior UN official at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv during his visit to the Gaza Strip last year, Anadolu reported.<\/p>\n
Yedioth Ahronoth daily said late Tuesday that UN Under-Secretary-General for Security, Gilles Michaud, was held for about 45 minutes after arriving in airport.<\/p>\n
Michaud was questioned by the Shin Bet domestic security agency about an official visit he made to Gaza in August 2025, which was coordinated with Israeli authorities.<\/p>\n
The daily, citing Israeli officials, described the incident as a \u201ccase of mistaken identity,\u201d saying Michaud, a Canadian citizen, was released shortly after.<\/p>\n
According to the report, the passport his was confiscated during security checks before he was moved to a holding area and questioned during the visit to Gaza.<\/p>\n
After the incident, Michaud said the treatment was “unusual” for a senior UN official and unlike anything he had experienced in other countries.<\/p>\n
According to the daily, the UN official intended to cancel his official meetings in Israel after the incident, without giving further details about the duration or purpose of his visit.<\/p>\n
