Leaders of the Bucharest Group (B9) and NATO’s Nordic allies said today that Russia remains the “most important, long-term and direct threat” to the alliance, stressing the need to strengthen NATO’s collective defense posture along its eastern flank, reports Anadolu.<\/p>\n

In a joint statement issued after the Summit in Bucharest, the leaders said that: “Russia is and will remain the most significant, long-term and immediate threat to the security of allies”.<\/p>\n

The statement added that “NATO must focus on the primary task of collective defence, including through a strong forward defense posture” in light of the current security environment.<\/p>\n

The meeting brought together leaders from the B9 group and Nordic allies along with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.<\/p>\n

The US also participated as an observer. The leaders said the allies are increasing defense investments and burden-sharing efforts as NATO members work toward a goal of spending 5 percent of gross domestic product on defense.<\/p>\n

They pledged to strengthen NATO’s military mobility, missile defense systems and infrastructure on its eastern flank, including expanding the alliance’s fuel pipeline system. The group reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while supporting Kiev’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations and continued military aid.<\/p>\n

“We strongly reaffirm our unwavering support for Ukraine. Support for Kiev is also an investment in our security,” the statement said.<\/p>\n

The leaders expressed support for ongoing US-led peace efforts on Ukraine and called for increased pressure on Russia to to engage in negotiations to end the war.<\/p>\n

They also expressed concern about developments in the Middle East and supported efforts to protect freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

The next summit of the B9 and Nordic allies will take place in Poland.<\/p>\n
