Israel again bans Muslims from their historic site of worship<\/p>\n
Israeli forces violently prevented Muslims from entering Al-Aqsa Mosque on Thursday while allowing large-scale incursions by Jewish ultranationalists ahead of the “Flag March” through Jerusalem’s Old City.<\/p>\n
The Old City, in occupied East Jerusalem, was under a near-total blockade to allow marches and interventions. Palestinian shops were forced to close and residents were ordered to stay indoors.<\/p>\n
\u201cBarriers and security restrictions are tighter than ever,\u201d an employee of the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf, which manages the Al-Aqsa Mosque, told Middle East Eye on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n
After morning prayers, Israeli authorities imposed strict measures at the mosque’s gates. Al-Aqsa.<\/p>\n
Israeli forces screened worshipers trying to reach the site, barring entry to men under 60 and women under 50.<\/p>\n
Soon after the end of the morning prayer (Fajr prayer), the mosque was mostly emptied of Palestinians, except for a small number of Waqf staff.<\/p>\n
Large groups of Israeli ultranationalists immediately attacked the heavily guarded site. police.<\/p>\n
At least 800 Israelis entered the mosque during the morning. During the raid, some participants performed religious rites and prayers and raised Israeli flags inside the mosque’s courtyard.<\/p>\n
Al-Aqsa Mosque is one of Islam’s holiest sites and is located on a plateau that Israelis call the Temple Mount, which in Jewish tradition is claimed to have been the site of the First and Second Temples.<\/p>\n
The centuries-old, internationally recognized status quo defines Al-Aqsa as an exclusively Muslim place of worship under the administration of the Islamic Waqf, which has authority over access, prayer and maintenance.<\/p>\n
Israel has increasingly violated that agreement by allowing almost daily settler occupations and public Jewish prayer at the site while marginalizing the Waqf’s authority.<\/p>\n
Among those involved in Thursday’s raid was Likud lawmaker Ariel Kallner, and Yitzhak Wasserlauf, Israel’s Minister for the Development of the Periphery, Negev and Galilee, from the Otzma Yehudi party, Itamar Ben Gvir.<\/p>\n
The major incursions come as Israel marks “Jerusalem Day,” a day commemorating the occupation of East Jerusalem in 1967 and its subsequent “unification” with West Jerusalem, which was occupied by Zionist militias during the Nakba. 1948.<\/p>\n
In addition to the Al-Aqsa Mosque attacks, Jerusalem Day celebrations include the controversial “Flag March,” which winds through the Old City, including predominantly Palestinian neighborhoods.<\/p>\n
The march has often been marked by racist and Islamophobic chants, attacks on Palestinian residents, and attacks on Palestinian property.<\/p>\n
This year’s Jerusalem Day events begin at sunset on Thursday and end on Friday evening, coinciding with Nakba Day, which commemorates the ethnic cleansing of more than 750,000 Palestinians by Zionist militias during the creation of the state of Israel in 1948.\/tesheshi<\/p>\n
