Although the decision has been confirmed, it has not yet been specified when the documents will be available to the public.

Mengele, an SS doctor, was responsible for selecting the prisoners at Auschwitz who were sent to the gas chambers during World War II. It is estimated that around 1.1 million people passed through the camp, of which around one million were Jews.

After the war, he fled Europe and lived in South America for decades, using a false identity. However, for years, historians have maintained that he may have been in Switzerland despite an international arrest warrant, according to the BBC.

Interest in Mengele’s possible presence in Switzerland grew further after it was discovered that he had been skiing in the Swiss Alps with his son in 1956. Subsequent research shows that his wife rented an apartment in Zurich in 1960 and even applied for permanent residence.

Swiss historian Regula Bochsler claims that there are indications that Mengele planned to return to Europe and that Austrian intelligence services warned Switzerland in 1961 that he was on its territory under a false name.

According to available documents, the police even put his wife’s apartment in Zurich under surveillance, where they recorded the movements of an unknown man.

However, Swiss authorities have previously refused historians’ requests to access the archive, explaining that the documents are protected until 2071 for national security and the protection of families.

This decision has drawn criticism from historians who believe that excessive secrecy only fuels conspiracy theories and public mistrust.

The issue of security and the truth historical

The Swiss Federal Intelligence Service has now changed its stance and has announced that it will provide access to the files, but “under certain conditions that have not yet been defined”.

Experts, however, doubt that the documents will provide definitive answers. Some believe the files may reveal more about the activities of foreign intelligence services than about Mengele himself.

Historians recall that Switzerland’s issue in World War II was already sensitive, especially regarding the rejection of Jewish refugees at the borders and the relationship with Nazi finance.

Josef Mengele was never arrested or convicted. He died in Brazil in 1979 with a false identity and his identity was only confirmed in 1992 by DNA analysis.

However, the question of whether he could have stayed in Switzerland after the war remains without a definitive answer. Historians say the full truth may never be known, but the opening of the files could at least provide a clearer picture of one of post-war Europe’s most controversial episodes. /square

Source: prizrenpost

Who was the infamous Nazi from a country that stayed out of the war as Europe burned Swiss authorities have announced that after decades of secrecy, they will open the long-closed files related to the Nazi war criminal Josef Mengele, known as the “Angel of Death” from the Auschwitz camp.
