{"id":36790,"date":"2026-05-17T16:30:25","date_gmt":"2026-05-17T14:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prizrenpost.com\/en\/malaysia-ends-search-and-rescue-operation-for-victims-of-migrant-boat-tragedy\/"},"modified":"2026-05-17T16:30:25","modified_gmt":"2026-05-17T14:30:25","slug":"malaysia-ends-search-and-rescue-operation-for-victims-of-migrant-boat-tragedy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prizrenpost.com\/en\/malaysia-ends-search-and-rescue-operation-for-victims-of-migrant-boat-tragedy\/","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia ends search and rescue operation for victims of migrant boat tragedy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/prizrenpost.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/migrante.jpg\" style=\"width:100%;height:auto;margin-bottom:20px\"><\/p>\n<p>Malaysian authorities have completed a nearly week-long search and rescue operation for victims of the tragic sinking of a boat carrying Indonesian migrants in the waters near Pulau Pangkor island last week, media reported Sunday, Anadolu reports.<\/p>\n<p>At least 16 people died and 23 others were rescued after a boat carrying 37 undocumented passengers sank on May 11 near island, state news agency Bernama reported.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysian Perak Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said the operation ended on Saturday after there were no new discoveries in the search area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInitial information received on the first day of the operation indicated that the total number of casualties was 37, however, this figure is believed to be incorrect,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The dead include nine men and seven women, whose bodies were taken to hospitals for autopsies and identification procedures.<\/p>\n<p>The operation was also carried out with the cooperation of security agencies, including the Royal Malaysian Navy, the Maritime Police, as well as fishing communities in the surrounding waters.<\/p>\n<p>The boat, believed to be carrying Indonesian migrants, capsized 8.2 nautical miles off the island of Pulau Pangkor while sailing to several destinations in Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia remains one of the main destinations for undocumented migrants from poorer parts of Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Smuggling networks often use sea routes, according to authorities, repeatedly leading to tragedies at sea.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-six migrants died when a boat capsized off the Thai-Malaysian coast last November.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"margin:30px 0\">\n<p style=\"font-size:13px;color:#666\">Source: <strong>prizrenpost<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Malaysian authorities have completed a nearly week-long search and rescue operation for victims of the tragic sinking of a boat carrying Indonesian migrants in the waters near Pulau Pangkor island last week, media reported Sunday, Anadolu reports.
