{"id":36976,"date":"2026-05-18T13:45:25","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T11:45:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prizrenpost.com\/en\/un-special-rapporteur-urges-mediterranean-countries-to-protect-sumud-global-flotilla\/"},"modified":"2026-05-18T13:45:26","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T11:45:26","slug":"un-special-rapporteur-urges-mediterranean-countries-to-protect-sumud-global-flotilla","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prizrenpost.com\/en\/un-special-rapporteur-urges-mediterranean-countries-to-protect-sumud-global-flotilla\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Special Rapporteur urges Mediterranean countries to protect Sumud Global Flotilla"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/prizrenpost.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/thumbs_b_c_92040173b6574809e1e20e6b0818a66e.jpg\" style=\"width:100%;height:auto;margin-bottom:20px\"><\/p>\n<p>The UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, today called on Mediterranean countries to protect the aid flotilla heading to Gaza, after activists reported unidentified ships near their convoy in international waters, reports Anadolu.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hands off the Flotilla,&#8221; Albanese wrote on the American social media platform X and called on Mediterranean countries to &#8220;protect civilian ships that are trying to break Israel&#8217;s genocidal siege on Gaza.&#8221; She further called on governments to &#8220;break the siege, end collaboration with apartheid and make justice happen&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Albanese made the comments while reposting a message from the Sumud Global Flotilla, which said: &#8220;Unidentified vessels have been seen near our fleet&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In its alert posted on Sunday evening, the flotilla said unidentified naval vessels, motorboats and drones were discovered near the convoy in international waters in the Mediterranean as the aid mission continued towards Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>The development came after the flotilla announced its arrival in international waters in the Mediterranean Sea.<\/p>\n<p>The Global Spring mission &#8220;Sumud Flotilla 2026&#8221;, aimed at breaking Israel&#8217;s blockade of the Gaza Strip and delivering vital humanitarian aid, was stopped by the Israeli army off the coast of Crete between April 29 and 30.<\/p>\n<p>The relief flotilla was attacked on April 30 near Crete, about 600 nautical miles from its destination. The first ships of the flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid, left Barcelona on April 12 while the main fleet left the Italian island of Sicily on April 26, aiming to break Israel&#8217;s years-long blockade.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has imposed a devastating blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007, leaving the territory&#8217;s 2.4 million residents on the brink of starvation.
