{"id":37407,"date":"2026-05-20T07:20:36","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T05:20:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prizrenpost.com\/en\/the-un-warns-of-the-risk-of-a-very-high-release-of-radioactivity-at-the-united-arab-emirates-plant\/"},"modified":"2026-05-20T07:20:37","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T05:20:37","slug":"the-un-warns-of-the-risk-of-a-very-high-release-of-radioactivity-at-the-united-arab-emirates-plant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prizrenpost.com\/en\/the-un-warns-of-the-risk-of-a-very-high-release-of-radioactivity-at-the-united-arab-emirates-plant\/","title":{"rendered":"The UN warns of the risk of &#8220;a very high release of radioactivity&#8221; at the United Arab Emirates plant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/prizrenpost.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/thumbs_b_c_243d4167106b2dd9e0bff45a78915bea.jpg\" style=\"width:100%;height:auto;margin-bottom:20px\"><\/p>\n<p>The head of the UN nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, has warned that a direct attack on the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates could lead to serious radioactive consequences, reports Anadolu.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at an emergency session of the UN Security Council after a recent drone attack on the facility, Grossi said that the situation is very worrying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a facility nuclear power plant in the Middle East, where the consequences of an attack could be very serious,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Grossi pointed out that the Barakah plant in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, about 300 kilometers from the capital of the same name, is a functioning nuclear facility containing thousands of kilograms of nuclear material, including new and used fuel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the event of an attack on the Barakah nuclear plant, a direct hit could result in a very high release of radioactivity in environment,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that damage to external power supply lines could also pose serious risks, potentially leading to damage to the reactor core.<\/p>\n<p>He further warned that both scenarios would require emergency protective measures, including evacuations, shelters and the use of stable iodine over distances stretching up to several hundred kilometers.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, UAE officials Arabs said a fire had broken out near the Barakah power plant as a result of a drone attack.<\/p>\n<p>The developments come as regional tensions have escalated since the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran in February. Tehran retaliated with attacks targeting Israel as well as US allies in the Persian Gulf, including the United Arab Emirates, along with closing the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>A cease-fire took effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement.
