France summoned the Israeli ambassador for consultation to express its “indignation” regarding the treatment of French citizens on board the Sumud Global Humanitarian Flotilla, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot announced today, reports Anadolu.<\/p>\n
“The actions of Mr. (Minister of National Security Itamar) Ben-Gvir towards the passengers of the Sumud Global Flotilla, condemned even by some of his colleagues in the government Israelis, are unacceptable,” said Barrot on the American social platform X.<\/p>\n
Barrot said that he has requested that Israel’s Ambassador to France be summoned to provide clarification regarding the incident.<\/p>\n
He also demanded the speedy release of the French citizens who participated in the flotilla.<\/p>\n
“Whatever is thought of this flotilla, and we have repeatedly expressed our disapproval of this initiative, our citizens who participate in they should be treated with respect and released as soon as possible,” he said.<\/p>\n
Barrot added that ensuring the safety of French nationals remains a “constant priority”.<\/p>\n
He also praised the efforts of French Foreign Ministry officials, the embassy and consular services involved in providing consular protection to the French citizens in question.<\/p>\n
The global humanitarian flotilla Sumud said on Tuesday that all 50 ships of its convoy of aid was seized by Israel. Together, they were carrying 428 people from 44 countries, having set out from Marmaris, Turkey, in a new attempt to break the illegal Israeli blockade imposed on Gaza since 2007.<\/p>\n
This was not the first attack on the flotilla.<\/p>\n
In April, the Israeli military attacked flotilla ships in international waters near the Greek island of Crete. The convoy at the time included 345 participants from 39 countries, including Turkish nationals.<\/p>\n
Israel has imposed a devastating blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007, leaving the territory of 2.4 million people on the brink of starvation.<\/p>\n
The Israeli military launched a fierce two-year offensive in Gaza in October 2023, killing more than 72,000 people, injuring over 172,000 and causing massive destruction throughout the surrounded territory.<\/p>\n
