Israeli human rights group Adalah accused Israeli authorities of carrying out a “criminal policy of abuse and humiliation” against activists detained by the humanitarian flotilla for Gaza, following the attack on it in international waters.<\/p>\n

In a statement on Wednesday, Adalah said videos released from the Port of Ashdod in southern Israel showed Israeli prison guards and soldiers assaulting and humiliating activists who had tried to break through. end the Israeli blockade of Gaza and send humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n

A video shared by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir showed activists being humiliated upon arrival at the port, while Transport Minister Miri Regev released another video describing the activists as “supporters of terrorism” and “drunk on alcohol”.<\/p>\n

“You knowingly caused harm to our state with this display of shameful, and not for the first time,” Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar wrote, referring to Ben-Gvir on the X social network.<\/p>\n

The footage broadcast by Channel 14 in Israel also showed activists kneeling with their hands tied behind their backs and their faces on the floor, while the Israeli national anthem played in the background.<\/p>\n

“After the illegal detention of the flotilla in international waters and the illegal abduction of over 400 activists from around the world, Israel is implementing a criminal policy of abuse and humiliation against activists who seek to confront Israel’s ongoing crimes against the Palestinian people,” Adalah said.<\/p>\n

The human rights group said it has documented “similar patterns of mistreatment” during previous flotilla missions, “for which Israel has not been held accountable.”<\/p>\n

Adalah announced that its lawyers and volunteer team entered the premises of port to provide legal assistance to the activists and will continue to demand their “immediate and unconditional release.”<\/p>\n

“The international community must take urgent measures to protect the members of the flotilla from this brutal and illegal behavior by Israeli officials,” the organization added.<\/p>\n

Organizers of the humanitarian flotilla said late Tuesday that more than 87 activists have begun a hunger strike in protest of their abduction by Israel and in solidarity with 9,500 Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli jails.<\/p>\n

According to the organizers, Israeli forces attacked a total of 50 ships with 428 people from 44 countries, including 78 Turkish nationals, in international waters on Monday.<\/p>\n

The flotilla had set off on Thursday from Turkey’s Marmaris district in a new attempt to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza, imposed since 2007.<\/p>\n

This was not the first such incident involving the flotilla.<\/p>\n

In late April, the Israeli military attacked flotilla ships in international waters near the Greek island of Crete. At the time, the caravan included 345 participants from 39 countries, including Turkish nationals.<\/p>\n

Israel has imposed a harsh blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007, leaving the territory’s 2.4 million residents on the brink of starvation.<\/p>\n

The Israeli military launched an offensive in Gaza in October 2023, killing more than 72,000 people, wounding over 172,000 others and causing massive destruction in the surrounded territory.<\/p>\n
