President Donald Trump said the US opposes any taxes on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and vowed that Iran will not be allowed to keep highly enriched uranium, reports Anadolu.<\/p>\n

“We don’t want taxes. It’s an international waterway. They’re not imposing taxes right now,” Trump told reporters at the White House.<\/p>\n

Trump claimed Iran is suffering huge financial losses due to the restrictions. in shipping activity.<\/p>\n

Asked if Iran could keep its stockpile of highly enriched uranium in any future deal, Trump responded flatly.<\/p>\n

“No, we’re going to take the highly enriched uranium; we’re going to take it,” Trump said. “We don’t need it. We don’t want it. We’ll probably destroy it once we get it, but we won’t let them have it,” he added.<\/p>\n

Regional tensions have escalated since the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28. Tehran retaliated with attacks on Israel as well as US allies in the Persian Gulf, along with closing the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

A ceasefire came into effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement. Trump later extended the ceasefire indefinitely, while maintaining a blockade on ships traveling to or from Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
