However, his comments appeared to contradict President Donald Trump’s reason for the pause, in which he indicated he might delay arms sales to Taiwan as a “negotiating card” with China.

“I haven’t approved it yet. We’ll see what happens,” Trump told Fox News, adding: “I might do it. I might not.” The US president told reporters after a trip to China that he discussed the issue with Chinese President Xi Jinping “in great detail” before saying he would “make a decision in the next fairly short period”.

According to media reports, the US for decades has respected the six guarantees, a set of six foreign policy principles guiding US-Taiwan relations implemented in 1982 during President Ronald Reagan’s administration, with the guarantee of second that stipulates that the US will not consult with China on arms sales to Taiwan.

Despite Cao’s assurances that the US has enough ammunition, reports show that the US military has spent thousands of missiles since the start of the Iran war on February 28, using up nearly half of the long-range cruise missiles in the Pentagon’s stockpile and depleting its stockpile of Tomahawk cruise missiles, interceptor missiles Patriot, Precision Strike missiles and ATACMS land-based missiles.

The White House plans to ask Congress for a reported $80 billion to $100 billion in additional funding for the war in Iran, with a significant amount of that amount earmarked to replenish the costly and sophisticated weapons that have been depleted in the fighting.

The only relief is that as of April, the war is turned into a tense ceasefire, with significantly less ammunition use. Hegseth has dismissed concerns about strained stockpiles, accusing the media and some lawmakers of exaggerating the issue.

“First of all, the munitions issue has been exaggerated unwisely and uselessly,” he told lawmakers last week, saying: “We know exactly what we have. We have a lot of what we need.”

Amid the war in Iran, Taiwan has asked the administration to Trump to continue arms sales as a means to prevent military aggression from China.

“If we want to prevent a war, I think it is better for Taiwan to be strong, able to defend itself, and therefore we should be able to secure, buy the weapons we need to have a stronger defense,” declared Taiwan’s representative to the US, Alexander Yui.

Source: prizrenpost

The United States (US) announced on Thursday that it is suspending $14 billion in arms sales to Taiwan because of the war with Iran, according to media reports, Anadolu reports.
